Scar Treatment in Thrissur

Scar treatment is not one procedure. Nuance Aesthetics evaluates the scar type, depth, colour, symptoms, skin tone and effect on movement before creating a personalised plan for safer, more meaningful improvement.

Start with diagnosis

What kind of scar do you have?

A depressed acne scar behaves very differently from a growing keloid or a burn contracture. Correct classification helps avoid unnecessary procedures and guides the sequence of treatment.

Important distinction

Dark marks are not always true scars

Flat red or brown marks after acne or injury may be post-inflammatory colour change rather than structural scar tissue. They may need acne control, sun protection, topical therapy, peels or a suitable laser—not surgical scar revision.

01

Depressed acne scars

Ice-pick, boxcar and rolling scars sit below the surrounding skin and often occur together.

Atrophic scars
02

Hypertrophic scars

Raised, firm scars that remain within the boundary of the original wound.

Raised scars
03

Keloid scars

Scars that grow beyond the original injury and may itch, hurt or recur after treatment.

Recurrence-prone
04

Surgical or traumatic scars

Wide, uneven, indented, tethered or poorly positioned scars after an operation or injury.

Linear or irregular
05

Burn scars and contractures

Thick scars that may pull across a joint, eyelid, lip, neck or hand and limit function.

Function matters
06

Colour and surface changes

Redness, darker or lighter colour, roughness and visible stitch marks may need targeted care.

Tone + texture
Treatment matching

The best option depends on the scar pattern

These are common medical options, not a ready-made package. Your doctor will recommend only the methods appropriate for your scar, skin and health.

Scar pattern Options that may be considered Clinical focus
Rolling acne scars Subcision, RF microneedling, fractional resurfacing, selected fillers or regenerative adjuncts Release tethering and improve dermal support
Ice-pick acne scars TCA CROSS or other focal reconstruction, punch excision in selected deep scars, resurfacing Treat narrow, deep scar channels precisely
Boxcar acne scars Fractional CO₂ laser, RF microneedling, punch elevation, subcision or combination treatment Address depth, edge definition and texture
Hypertrophic scar / keloid Silicone, pressure, scar injections, cryotherapy or laser; selected surgery with recurrence-prevention planning Flatten, soften and reduce itch or pain
Wide or tethered surgical scar Laser or microneedling for texture; surgical revision and layered closure when indicated Improve width, direction, contour and mobility
Burn scar / contracture Scar care, splinting or therapy, laser in selected cases; release, graft or flap for functional restriction Restore movement as well as appearance
Flat dark or red mark Sun protection, topical therapy, acne control, chemical peel or selected light/laser treatment Correct colour while protecting Indian skin
Comprehensive options

Scar treatments that may form part of your plan

Availability and suitability are confirmed after examination. Some advanced surgical or reconstructive procedures are planned in an appropriate hospital setting rather than performed at the clinic.

01

Scar care, silicone and pressure

Useful for selected healing, hypertrophic or keloid scars after the skin has closed. Never apply silicone over an open wound unless your doctor advises it.

02

Intralesional scar injections

Corticosteroid, sometimes combined with another medicine such as 5-FU, may soften raised scars and reduce itch or pain. Multiple visits may be needed.

03

TCA CROSS

A doctor applies a small amount of high-strength acid precisely inside selected ice-pick or narrow boxcar scars. It is not a full-face home peel.

04

Medical microneedling

Controlled micro-injuries stimulate remodelling and can improve suitable atrophic scars with a recovery profile tailored to the patient.

05

RF microneedling

Combines needles with radiofrequency energy at selected depths to address acne-scar texture and dermal remodelling.

06

Fractional CO₂ laser

Creates fractional treatment zones for resurfacing and collagen remodelling. Settings, preparation and aftercare are especially important in brown skin.

07

Subcision

A minor procedure used to release fibrous bands beneath rolling or tethered scars. It may be combined with resurfacing or volume correction.

08

Punch techniques

Deep, sharply defined acne scars may be considered for punch excision, elevation or grafting before resurfacing.

09

Fillers or fat grafting

Selected depressed scars may benefit from volume support after tethering is assessed. Temporary fillers and surgical fat grafting have different roles.

10

PRP as an adjunct

Platelet-rich plasma may be paired with selected procedures as a supportive adjunct. It does not replace correction of deep tethering or scar edges.

11

Surgical scar revision

Excision with precise layered closure, reorientation or Z-/W-plasty may help selected wide, poorly placed or restrictive scars. It replaces one scar with a planned scar—it does not erase it.

12

Burn contracture reconstruction

When a scar limits movement, plastic-surgery options may include contracture release, skin grafting, local flaps or other reconstruction in a hospital setting.

13

Dermabrasion

Controlled mechanical resurfacing can soften selected raised edges or surface irregularities. It is different from a salon microdermabrasion and requires medical assessment.

14

Cryotherapy

Freezing may be considered for selected small raised scars, often alongside injections. It can cause lasting light spots in darker skin, so suitability must be judged carefully.

15

Vascular or pigment-targeted laser

Selected light or laser devices may reduce persistent redness or excess pigment. Treating colour is different from correcting the depth or tethering of a scar.

16

Physiotherapy, splinting and camouflage

Massage, stretching, splints or pressure garments may support burn-scar mobility. Corrective camouflage can reduce visibility when a procedure is unsuitable or while a scar matures.

The right specialist at the right stage

Dermatologist and plastic surgeon availability

Scar care crosses two specialties. Nuance offers dermatologist assessment and plastic surgeon consultation by prior appointment, so the plan can match both the skin problem and the structural problem.

Dermatologist

  • Controls active acne or skin inflammation before scar procedures
  • Assesses pigmentation, redness, scar activity and keloid tendency
  • Plans topical care, injections, peels, microneedling, RF or laser
  • Guides pre-treatment preparation and post-procedure skin care

Plastic surgeon

  • Assesses wide, depressed, tethered or badly positioned scars
  • Evaluates scars affecting movement, facial features or body contour
  • Plans scar revision, Z-plasty, grafts, flaps or fat grafting when suitable
  • Performs indicated surgical procedures in an appropriate hospital setting
When a combined opinion helps: mixed acne-scar patterns, recurrent keloids, scars crossing a joint, post-burn deformity, facial scars, scars with tissue loss, and scars that have not improved after earlier treatment.
Your treatment pathway

What to expect at Nuance

A careful scar plan often uses a sequence rather than doing every treatment together. Active disease, infection or an open wound is addressed first.

Assessment

History, symptoms, previous treatment, medicines and tendency to form raised scars.

Scar mapping

Type, depth, colour, tethering, skin tone and functional restriction are documented.

Plan

Your doctor explains options, limits, risks, downtime, sequence and likely number of visits.

Treatment

Procedure parameters are selected for the scar—not copied from a standard package.

Review

Healing and response are reviewed before the next stage is chosen or settings are changed.

Designed for Indian skin

Skin tone is part of the prescription

Brown skin can develop post-inflammatory darkening or, less commonly, lightening after aggressive procedures. That does not mean treatment is impossible; it means diagnosis, energy, depth, spacing and aftercare must be selected carefully.

Active acne firstOngoing breakouts can create new scars while old scars are being treated.
Sun protectionConsistent photoprotection helps reduce colour change before and after procedures.
Preparation when neededSelected patients may need a pre-procedure skin-care plan or test area.
Planned recoveryDo not pick crusts or use unapproved actives; follow the written aftercare advice.
Honest expectations

What scar treatment can—and cannot—do

Improvement, not erasureA scar can usually be made less noticeable, but it cannot be returned to completely uninjured skin.
Results take timeCollagen remodelling and scar maturation continue gradually after treatment.
A course may be neededMultiple sessions or combination treatment is common, especially with mixed acne scars.
Keloids can recurRaised scars may return even after good treatment, so prevention and follow-up matter.

Common questions

Scar treatment FAQs

Clear answers before you choose a procedure.

Which is the best scar treatment in Thrissur?

There is no single best treatment for every scar. Rolling acne scars may need subcision, ice-pick scars may need focal TCA CROSS or punch treatment, raised scars may need injections and silicone, and restrictive scars may need plastic-surgical revision. Examination is essential.

Can a scar be removed completely?

No. Treatment aims to make a scar flatter, softer, smoother, less discoloured or less restrictive. Surgical revision replaces the old scar with a more favourably planned scar; it does not produce unscarred skin.

What treatments are used for acne scars?

Depending on whether scars are ice-pick, boxcar or rolling, options may include TCA CROSS, subcision, microneedling, RF microneedling, fractional CO₂ laser, punch techniques, selected fillers and regenerative adjuncts. Mixed scars commonly need a combination plan.

Can old surgical or injury scars be improved?

Often, yes. The possible improvement depends on scar width, colour, contour, location, maturity and whether it is tethered. Options range from laser or microneedling to formal scar revision by a plastic surgeon.

Do keloid scars come back after treatment?

They can. Keloids have a genuine risk of recurrence, particularly after excision alone. Doctors often use a combination of injections, silicone or pressure, selected laser or cryotherapy, and carefully planned follow-up. Surgery is reserved for selected cases with a recurrence-prevention plan.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies with scar type, severity, treatment and healing response. Many non-surgical treatments require a series, while some focal or surgical procedures may be done once and followed by additional care. Your doctor will estimate a course only after assessment.

How much downtime should I expect?

Downtime ranges from minimal redness after some procedures to several days of swelling, crusting or peeling after stronger resurfacing. Surgical revision has a different recovery. You will receive treatment-specific aftercare and activity advice.

Is laser scar treatment safe for darker Indian skin?

It can be appropriate, but darker skin has a higher tendency toward post-inflammatory colour change. Correct diagnosis, conservative parameters, suitable preparation, sun protection and follow-up help manage this risk. Not every scar or patient is a laser candidate.

Should I consult a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon?

A dermatologist is usually central for active acne, pigmentation, keloid injections, peels, microneedling and laser care. A plastic surgeon is important for wide, tethered, deformed or function-limiting scars and when surgical revision may help. Nuance offers access to both by prior booking.

What is the consultation fee for scar assessment at Nuance?

The doctor consultation fee is ₹400. Procedure cost depends on the scar pattern, treatment selected, area and number of sessions. A treatment estimate is provided after assessment.
